How studying abroad transforms lives

Learning a new language or connecting with the world in different ways – what really changes in the lives of those who decide to study abroad? If you believe it’s a combination of both, you’re right. But there’s even more to it.

There are many ways to broaden your horizons and acquire new skills, whether by going to another country or exploring alternatives that don’t require leaving home. Mastering a new language can seem like a challenge, especially when travel is not possible. Fortunately, there are many ways to make this process easier.

Language learning apps allow students to practice every day. Watching movies and series in another language, practicing conversation with foreigners online, or engaging in cultural exchange programs are also great alternatives for connecting with a new language and culture without crossing borders.

For those seeking full immersion, studying at a language school abroad can be a great choice. Other options include getting a job in another country or volunteering with international organizations. These experiences help improve language skills and provide personal growth and a new perspective on the world.

Skills students showcase to the world

Studying abroad is much more than just improving language skills. According to ResearchNed, five years after an exchange, 97% of participants still feel the benefits in their personal lives, and 89% see improvements in their careers.

This happens because the experience extends beyond the classroom, bringing lasting impacts on how students view the world and themselves.

A broader view of the world: By engaging with new cultures, students begin to see the world in a completely different way. Social, political, and economic issues that were previously unnoticed now become part of their reality, contributing to a more critical and mature mindset.

Critical thinking: Exposure to different realities strengthens students’ critical thinking skills, helping them make more informed decisions in both their personal and professional lives. According to ResearchNed, 84% of participants reported significant personal growth after their exchange.

Creative solutions: Understanding diverse global perspectives also stimulate students’ creativity, a skill increasingly valued in the job market, which demands innovation and unconventional solutions.

Adaptation and resilience: Living in another country pushes students out of their comfort zones, making them adapt quickly to new situations. This resilience is a major reason why 80% of students abroad become more independent and ready to face global challenges with clarity and confidence.

Increased confidence and self-esteem: Traveling to new places and overcoming challenges in a new language boosts students’ confidence in their own abilities. This increase in self-esteem positively affects their personal and professional lives.

Problem-solving skills: Facing challenging situations in another country enhances students’ problem-solving skills. They learn to handle unexpected issues creatively and effectively, which becomes a competitive advantage in their professional careers.

Communication and collaborative skills: Additionally, interacting with different cultures improves students’ communication and collaboration skills, which are crucial in the global job market. 64% of exchange program participants reported learning to value and respect cultural differences, while 56% saw significant improvements in international communication and collaboration. These gains expand their professional networks and directly impact their career journeys.

With an average rating of 8.4 for personal impact and 7.5 for professional impact, it is clear that these experiences shape the way students see themselves and the world.

More than just learning a language, students become more prepared and open-minded for the future.
