How To Navigate Internet Safely: A Guide For Teens And Kids

The internet is a gigantic network that has the ability to connect virtually everyone around the world. Millions of people with computers and other electronic devices are able to connect to the internet. The internet is a space for people to communicate, share and find information, play games, or watch movies and videos. The internet is a tool for us to learn about anything that sparks our interest, whether it is dinosaurs, animals, outer space, or what your favorite TV characters are up to!

Nonetheless, due to the endless possibilities that the internet offers us it is crucial to be careful while navigating it. The main reason why we have to be careful is because we don’t know the full scope of what’s on the internet. It is important to be careful while navigating the internet because we don’t always know who we are interacting with and who is really behind the screen. Just like in the real world, beware of stranger danger – as not everyone might have good intentions. Sharing personal information like your name, phone number, home address, or other details of yourself or your family might be dangerous and can put you and those you love at risk. Keeping this information safe within your friends and family is the best way to ensure you are staying safe and away from the potential dangers of the internet.

Sharing Visual Content

Additionally, it is important to be careful sharing pictures and videos of yourself online because you never know where on the web they are going to end up. Even if you think you are sharing pictures of yourself with trusted friends or posting them on private social media accounts, you can never be too safe. There is no guarantee that those pictures or videos won’t be copied and posted on other websites without your knowledge and permission. Something that was intended for your close friends and family to see might end up reaching strangers around the web. This is due to the fact that once something is published online it is harder to control who has access to it or not. In order to avoid any dangers of the internet, it is important to be mindful of what we are posting online. If you are having doubts about whether or not to post something online, it is always best to ask a trusted adult, like a family member, for their opinion.

Clicking Unknown Links

Moreover, it is important to be careful with the links we click on because not every website is safe. When you click an unknown link, the internet can redirect you to a website that contains harmful content, known as malware, which can harm your electronic device or hack your personal information. This is tricky since some of these websites might look appealing as they might be offering you discounts, games, or other exciting stuff. In order to protect yourself you should avoid clicking on unknown links and stay within the websites that you are familiar with and authorized to engage with. Be careful before clicking on unknown links and if you are unsure, always consider asking a responsible adult for their opinion.

Understanding the Source

Moreover, not everything that you see on the internet is true. The internet is rich in all types of information but not everything you read online is accurate. Often, online websites or social media sites might post information that is not fully accurate and can’t be trusted. One way to avoid being misinformed is to check the information you are being presented with across multiple educational websites and books. Moreover, it is also a good idea to double check information with trusted adults like family members and teachers, who can tell you whether or not the information you found is true. This will allow you to continue learning and avoid being misinformed!

Overall, the internet is a wonderful tool that allows us to communicate, learn, and have fun. It is important to know how to use it safely to avoid the dangers pertaining to strangers, dangerous sites, or misinformation. Keep your information private, be careful when posting online, and always double check with adults if you have any doubts regarding what you are finding online.
