Congratulations Dinma!
Many congratulations to Chidinma “Dinma” Uzuegbu—winner of Battle of the Teal, Performing and Visual Arts, Elementary Division. Battle of Teal judges were very impressed with Dinma’s assured and fun performance of Won’t He Do It?
Dinma says she really enjoyed the Battle of the Teal experience, particularly that she was able to choose what she wanted to perform. She would definitely encourage other kids to enter Battle of the Teal to showcase their talents in a friendly environment.
Born to Perform
Dinma, aged eight, has always been a BIG fan of performing. Her Mom and Dad noticed it when she was one year old. At that time, she was just singing random stuff, including “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star”. “When I was three and four years old, I used to record myself singing songs from Frozen, or the songs I made up in my head. I still do it,” Dinma says. She would also go down to the basement with her brother, Dalu, making music with big, wooden spoons and big paint buckets.
I would always ask, “Mom, Dad, can you please take me to a choir?” My parents said, “when I get old enough, but for now, I could do the talent show, Battle of the Teal.”
What are Your Interests and Influences
Not surprisingly, music is a big interest for Dinma, particularly RnB, Hip Hop, Soul, and especially Pop. Dinma wants to focus on these music genres because she feels it allows her to explain more about herself. “Because if you don’t be yourself, everyone will get used to your fake self,” Dinma explains.
A singer who has made a real impact on Dinma is Soul singer Ruth B. Dinma says, “I like her because I think she sings like me and plays piano. She also uses stories to build her songs.”
When not singing, Dinma enjoys photography and blooklets.
What are Some of the Lessons You Have Learnt
Dinma feels, “It’s important to defend kids that get made fun of, or others kids are being mean to.”
Dinma says you should try to be kind and considerate to people as, “you never know what someone is going through.” She also believes you have to stay true to yourself as, “Not all famous people have good lives.”
Plans for the Future
Dinma explains, “Some of my goals are to become a teacher at a school.” She also wants to be “a singer and dancer at a young age with a singing group or choir.” After her amazing performance at Battle of the Teal, Dinma is well on her way to realizing her performing ambitions!
